The Joinery

Sarah and her husband, Jon, have been married for 16 years– ten of which have been shared with their great dane “baby,” Huckleberry. Jon’s previous career in music and Sarah’s in software consulting have given them decades of experience in travel. They have covered the United States multiple times over and visited over 30 countries, and they absolutely love it. This passion for travel is fueled by the rush of discovering the unknown– particularly design and food! It is this love for clean design and good food that have brought them to where they are today. In 2011, they started Seventeen20, a small furniture company that specializes in handcrafted, minimal, modern design, and are currently nearing completion on a food hall and craft brewery, The Joinery.

What is your business? The Joinery is a modern food hall and brewery.

Who are your clients? We have two customer bases, actually—the first is our tenants: food and retail vendors who will operate out of The Joinery. The second is the public: anyone and everyone who likes good food and good times!

What inspired you to become an entrepreneur? My husband, Jon. He’s fearless, passionate, and not afraid of the unknown. His passion for our city and doing something he loves, no matter how hard it may be, has completely inspired me!

What are some business wins? The vendors we’ve been able to attract! We are so excited that they caught the vision for what we’re creating and believed in it (and us) enough to do this!

What are your short-term goals? To open! We began the process hoping to open in late summer, but there are always challenges in renovation/construction, so unfortunately we’ve been delayed a bit. We are hoping to soft open in November.

How has Catapult helped you? In all sorts of ways! As Seventeen20, we’ve been participating in a program through Catapult to meet with other small business owners who are similar in size/age and act as each others’ board of directors. With The Joinery, Catapult staff have connected us with mentors, potential business partners/investors, and even food vendors! Finally, we currently operate out of Catapult while The Joinery is under construction. This has allowed us to work and meet tenants and vendors in a clean, quiet, comfortable space.

Secret Sauce? Our community! We have absolutely relied and depended on our friends, family, and the local business community to do everything, and without their steadiness, passion, and belief in us, we wouldn’t be able to tackle this.
