Dan is a fourth generation entrepreneur who became intrigued with beer after working for an Anheuser-Busch distributor and noticing that craft beer was entering the market. He started experimenting from home and learned that the world of beer was not one-sided. While walking through the Downtown Farmers Market, Dan noticed that no one was selling home-brewing supplies, so he started Swan City Brewing to make beer more accessible. He realized that Lakeland could support several micro-breweries, found some people who shared his dream, and is now planning to open a brewery by mid-summer 2017.
What is your business? We are a local micro-brewery.
Who are your clients? We cater to everyone (must be 21 to indulge!), but I want our brewery to be family and pet friendly because sometimes you really want to take everyone out for tacos and games while you enjoy a cold beer.
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur? My dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all entrepreneurs in the amusement industry, so I learned a lot from them.
Business wins? We will be the only business in downtown Lakeland with rotating food trucks!
Hardest part? Getting over the fear that comes with self-doubt. Too much of that fear can cause you to freeze, but having a little fear can also keep you grounded.
Something interesting? The fermenters we use to make the beer have removable lids which allow us to use an old form of beer brewing called “cool-shipping.” Basically, we can create funky beers using native, wild yeasts that are floating microscopically throughout Lakeland!
Why Lakeland? It is fantastic and centrally located with tons of room for expansion and improvement.
Favorite things to do in Lakeland? 1) Play at Common Ground Park with my son. 2) Eat at our great local restaurants. 3) BEER! I love Lakeland Brewing Co, Brew Hub, Brass Tap and am super stoked about Cob & Pen.
How has Catapult helped you? Aside from having a cool place to work, the connections I have made are invaluable.
Secret Sauce? Every failure is an opportunity to learn.
