Chalk & Chances

Julie is currently, and always has been, a teacher. After graduating college, she spent fifteen years as an early childhood + elementary school teacher. As she worked her way up in the school system as an assistant principal and principal, she envisioned herself as a “teacher of teachers.” She loved witnessing the educators in her school stretch themselves and grow. Now that she is a professor in the School of Education at Florida Southern College, her focus has shifted to teaching graduate students to answer their own powerful questions through qualitative research methods. She has the incredible opportunity to teach through her writing and speaking, and credits the teachers in her life for the strong foundation. Through her website, Chalk & Chances, she hopes to honor teachers, past and present, for the impact they’ve had on the lives of students. Julie believes that everyone has a story, and shared stories help us reflect and connect.

What is your business? Chalk & Chances began as a research project driven by a powerful question: What difference do teachers really make in the lives of their students? After hundreds of interviews with people from ages 18 to 80, that research project grew into an online community.

Who are your clients? I speak to educator groups, sharing the themes found in stories I have collected. There are lessons contained in each one. If teachers know what makes a lasting impact, they can do more of it.

What inspired you to become an entrepreneur? I wanted to start a conversation about teacher impact. It has become narrowly defined by test scores, but it is much bigger than scores. I am advocating for a broader definition of teacher impact.

What are some business wins? Several teachers have contacted me to say that the stories on the Chalk & Chances website are reminders of their impact. It has also inspired people to reach out to their teachers and thank them for making a difference in their lives.

How has Catapult helped you? The camaraderie at Catapult motivates me. Everyone there is trying to build something. I also have gained useful strategies in the workshops and mentoring sessions.

What are your short-term goals? My current efforts are focused on increasing awareness of the Chalk & Chances project and increasing engagement on the website.

What is your Secret Sauce? My secret sauce is the power of story. Stories touch hearts and minds in a way no other data can. I believe stories are a catalyst for reflection, conversation and change.
