Raney began sewing in elementary school, attending camps and private lessons throughout her childhood. She fell in love with every aspect of the action, even the simple tasks like threading the machines and trimming the threads. As she grew in her skillset, Raney began making her own clothes, embroidering gifts, and doing alterations to make a little extra money. This passion followed her the entire length of college until she graduated in 2015. Following graduation, she took an administrative job, but knew it wasn’t where her heart was. In October of 2015, she took a leap of faith and began her own clothing line, Rane Made. She focuses on creating fine-quality, passion-filled, intentionally-crafted, handmade products for women.
What is your business? I design and make comfortable women’s clothing. All of the pieces that come from my shop are made with soft fabric and are personally cut, sewn, tagged, and packaged by me.
How has receiving a micro-grant from Catapult’s funding program changed your business? The grant allowed me to purchase industrial machinery, which has tripled my productivity! These machines will sew about five times more stitches per minute as my domestic machines I was using before.
What are some wins for your business since receiving the grant? I have been able to make more products in the same amount of time. This helps me to send orders out quicker and participate in more events! A big win for me is having the extra time to pattern new items and explore new ideas for my brand.
Why Lakeland? I grew up here. I planned to possibly move one day, but I feel so at home here. With groups like Catapult and support from my family and friends in Lakeland, it feels right to stay.
How has Catapult helped you? With the grant, I have been able to expand my business and grow at a faster rate than I would have been able to on my own. I have called Catapult for help with many things or when I am stuck on a project and they are always excited and willing to help me in any way they can!
What is your Secret Sauce? Encouragers. Running your own business is HARD. I have decided to be strategic in my friendships and partnerships so that I surround myself with positive and encouraging people. It’s so important to have people around you who can lift you up and help you fulfill your full purpose when you feel like you can’t do it.
