Sarah grew up in a small Ohio town with a population of 25,000. She began working with her father, a national general contractor, when she was only 14. At 16, Sarah graduated ahead of schedule in the very first graduating class of her high school. In 2005, Sarah started working for a drywall company in Georgia to obtain general contracting licenses in the southeast, qualifying her as a general contractor in many states. While in Georgia, she also worked as an estimator + construction coordinator to build luxury apartment complexes. In 2009, she moved to Florida to work for the Polk County School Board and improve schools within the county. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from USF while working full-time for a Lakeland-based contractor. Sarah passed the Florida Certified Building Contractor exam in August of 2013 and incorporated Keener Builders in January of 2014. She is actively + immensely involved in Lakeland through a long list of community organizations.
What is your business? We are a full-service general contracting company. The core of our business is general contracting, both residential and commercial, but we also partner with our clients by providing consultation before a build and assist in permitting and planning.
Who are your clients? I have three ideal clients: young, growing families looking to build their dream home, commercial clients looking to grow through tenant build-outs, and individuals or companies seeking consultation + navigation through the construction process.
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur? Growing up, my father was a general contractor and I began working with him when I was 14. I love the ability to control my income while helping people.
What are your short-term goals? My current goals are to begin building custom homes in the Midtown area of Lakeland, working alongside the Lakeland Community Redevelopment Agency.
What are some business wins? Finally determining my ideal clients. For a long time, I didn’t have a defined path + took on any job I could get. Once I realized who I wanted to work for, I was able to grow. Building Lakeland’s Beer Rev was my first official project and the space turned out with the exact vision the clients had. It was exciting to have someone in our community trust me with their dream.
How has Catapult helped you? Catapult took me from operating out of my house into a real workspace. I am able to have business meetings in a professional setting, which I was not able to accomplish from home. The people who are a part of Catapult help to encourage my growth + I love the incredible networking community it seamlessly provides.
What is your Secret Sauce? Processes. Having proper processes in place is the best way to build a lasting company.
