Laura Helm

In 2009, Laura moved to Lakeland from Indiana and started working in corporate and non-profit event management. She quickly learned that she needed a more creative outlet and began Ashton Events to allow the art of storytelling to work simultaneously with planning and logistics. Since then, she has become a member of Catapult, hired three employees, added a floral design company, and is opening a brand new office and floral studio this summer. She has also started another company, Haus Management, that will manage an event venue, Haus 820, and office spaces, called the Collective.

What is your business? Ashton Events is a full-service event planning, design, and floral company. Haus Management oversees Haus 820 (a new event venue) and offices at the Collective at Mass Market.

Who are your clients? Ashton Events works a variety of events, often weddings. Haus 820 will cater to people looking to have an event in a fully renovated, historic warehouse; a perfect balance of vintage and modern.

What inspired you to become an entrepreneur? I didn’t grow up dreaming about running a business. I saw this path as something I was meant to do because I wanted to offer a different approach to the event planning industry.

Something interesting? Ashton Events was named after my middle name, Ashton. Haus 820 was named because of a plaque outside of my grandparent’s house that reads “Helm Haus.” We aren’t even German!

Business win? Ashton Events is currently featured in an editorial spread in Southern Weddings Magazine, which has been a bucket list item!

Why Lakeland? I fell in love with the community and charm. It is big enough (and growing fast enough) for your business to thrive, but also small enough that you know each face that helped you along the way.

What would you like to see in Lakeland? Something like Pinewood Social in Nashville. It’s a mix of a coffee shop, restaurant, and bowling alley!

How has Catapult helped you? Catapult has given me a supportive community, helped me learn and fine-tune the business skills that don’t come easily, and daily encourages me to not be afraid of failure.

Secret Sauce? My faith and our community. Being given the grace to dream, fail, and try again is something I never take for granted.
